Moving Diversity Forward: Using Embedded Diversity Practices to Enhance Learning Opportunities for Youth

This session will introduce participants to best practices for implementing multicultural literature into curriculums. The goal of the session is to engage participants in a meaningful, reflective discussion about the importance of diversity and inclusion as a strategic imperative for creating a sense of equality for all students.
- Participants will develop a deeper understanding about the meaning of diversity in children’s books.
- Participants will learn useful strategies for incorporating diversity into library programs on a consistent basis.
- Participants will understand the role of librarians in selecting authentic, multicultural books that reflect a myriad of cultures and experiences.

Andrea Jamison is a librarian and lecturer at Valparaiso University. She received a Masters of Art in Teaching from Concordia University and a Master of Library Science degree from Dominican University School of Library and Information Science in River Forest, Illinois. Her major included a focus on school libraries and youth services. She is currently completing doctoral work in Information Studies at Dominican University. Her current research involves examining the marginalization of African Americans in children’s literature.
Andrea Jamison has over 17 years of experience working in schools and libraries. She speaks internationally on issues related to creating inclusive learning spaces for youth and the interplay of race, power, and privilege in children’s books. She was recently selected as a reading ambassador for diverse children’s books by Lee and Low Publishing. She is a current board member for ALA’s Ethnic & Multicultural Information Exchange Roundtable’s and chair for the David Cohen/Multicultural Awards. She also works extensively with ALA’s Office of Intellectual Freedom as a contributing blogger and member of their prison rights and collection development working groups.
