The purpose of the MedlinePlus Go Local project is to link MedlinePlus users to information about health services in local communities, including hospitals, physicians, nursing homes, support groups, health screening providers, and others. You can link directly from each MedlinePlus health topic to services related to that particular topic. For example, if you choose Go Local from the MedlinePlus Chronic Fatigue Syndrome page, you will find links to local services such as Acupuncturists, Internists, Osteopaths, Hospitals and so on in the area you select.

The number of awards made is dependent on funding availability.  Maximum award is $25,000.

Ben Roethlisberger named as Library Card Sign-up Month Spokesperson

Free promotional tools now online

(Chicago) The ALA announced today that Ben Roethlisberger, quarterback of the 2006 Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers, will be the spokesperson for this year’s Library Card Sign-up Month, which begins September 1. Roethlisberger is featured on an ALA Graphics READ poster, which is being sent to national media by ALA as a public service announcement.

Promotional tools in Spanish and English are available online to promote The Smartest Card. Get It. Use It. @ your library theme for Library Card Sign-up Month. Tools include “52 Ways to Use Your Library Card,” a sample proclamation, press release, op-ed, letter-to-the-editor, PSA scripts and “Smartest Card” artwork. There are also links to “Smartest Card” promotional items available from ALA Graphics.

Sample tools and examples of how libraries have promoted Library Card Sign-up Month using the Smartest Card are available at www.ala.org/librarycardsignup.

Observed the month of September since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month is a time when ALA and libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all and the smartest card a student can own.

The response to our August 16th workshop has been so strong that we decided to hold a 2nd.
That filled quite quickly, so we are now offering a 3rd WEB 2.0 workshop on August 14th.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid has a “My Medicare Preventive Benefits Checklist”, that can be reproduced and given our to your patrons who have Medicare benefits.

This form can be taken on a visit to the doctor or the pharmacist to help your patrons remember what is covered under Medicare and how often they need to be checked by their doctor.

The checklist can help-

1. Increase awareness and utilization of preventive benefits.
2. Encourage beneficiaries to speak to their healthcare providers about the preventive benefits available to them.
3. Encourage beneficiaries to enroll and use mymedicare.gov.

The mymedicare.gov website is an interactive fully functional site for people to use to check on their claims and for reminders of preventive benefits. Each person can request a password that will be used to access their information.

Please feel free to makes copies of the this Preventive Benefits checklist and leave them near the circulation and reference areas for your patrons’ use. Here is the link to this checklist in English

Although I will be scheduling E-rate training in Pennsylvania during the month of October, I wanted to let you know that the SLD is holding a 1.5 day training session in Washington, DC on September 13 and 14th at the Marriott at Metro Center. Registration on the SLD website (www.usac.org/sl) will begin on Monday, July 23 and will only accommodate 250 registrants (so mark your calendars if you’d like to attend). Negotiated prices for hotel rooms will be announced on July 23 as well.

The purpose of the SLD training is to provide the latest program updates and guidance on how to successfully participate in the E-rate program. It is not, however, a beginners course. So if you are new to E-rate, I encourage you to wait and register for one of my PA E-rate trainings for beginners, which will be announced in August.

The SLD will be holding identical trainings in various US cities, including Cleveland, through the end of October as follows:

You don’t have to be a media mogul to create audio and video for iPods

Getting started is easier than you might think. There are three key parts to implementing podcasting successfully at your library: creating the podcast content, distributing the podcasts, and, if possible, aggregating and syncing to iPods locally (if you choose to manage and circulate iPods to your patrons). If you choose not to circulate the hardware, creation and distribution are the only necessary steps to begin exploring.
