The Pennsylvania Humanities Council invites public libraries to apply for a special series of humanities presentations. Libraries selected for the series will sponsor three programs from PHC’s bureau of Commonwealth Speakers during spring and summer 2008.

The series is timed around the launch of the 2008-2009 Commonwealth Speakers program. The new line-up offers over 135 presentations on the arts, history and heritage, literature, and current affairs led by a variety of spokespeople for the humanities. It includes hands-on presentations, performances combined with discussion, and family programs, along with more traditional lecture-type presentations.

By allowing selected libraries to run three programs, PHC aims to help libraries gain experience and skills in conducting adult programs and in marketing themselves as community centers of lifelong learning.

The postmark deadline is February 28, 2008. The application materials and Commonwealth Speakers catalog can be accessed online at www.pahumanities.org.

No pre-registration is required, although you will be required to sign-in when you log-in to the webinar. For individuals that may not be familiar with webinars, you simply log-in to a pre-announced website where you will view the training online from the comfort of your own computer. (A brief list of reminders will be presented, with most of the session reserved for applicants’ live written and voice questions). Detailed instructions are listed below in order to prepare your computer for the webinar and to participate the day of the event.

PREPARATION FOR THE WEBINAR:
If this is your first time attending a webinar via Elluminate:

Go to the CCIU Configuration Room to test your connection, microphone and speakers at www.pdewebinars.org

If necessary download the Sun Microsystem’s Java Web Start (or OpenJNLP for Mac), a pre-requisite to Elluminate. You only need to do this the first time you use Elluminate. To do this go to www.elluminate.com

A headset with microphone or external speakers and microphone are strongly recommended to enhance your Webinar experience. If you do not have access to a microphone you will be able to communicate with others via text messaging.

PLEASE NOTE: Port 80 and Port 2187 must be open on your end to access the Elluminate Server.

DAY OF THE WEBINAR:

Please go to vclass.cciu.org and click on the NAME OF MEETING link under the Meeting Name Column. (You may join the room 30 minutes prior to the start time).

Connect your speakers, microphone and/or headset before joining the Webinar.

On vclass.cciu.org locate the ‘E-rate FY 2008: Updates and Refreshers’ course.

Use your First and Last Name as your Login Name and click “Log In” (there is no password for this session).

You will automatically be taken to the Elluminate Session where the presentation will be held.
