National Library Legislative Day 2008

National Library Legislative Day (NLLD) will be held on May 13 & 14 for librarians of all kinds in Washington, DC.

National Library Legislative Day (NLLD) is a two-day event in which people who care about libraries participate in advocacy and issue training sessions, interact with Capitol Hill insiders, and visit congressional member offices to ask Congress to pass legislation that supports libraries.

Serials/Electronic Resources Librarian: HACC

Responsibilities: Developing and managing access & control processes for serial publications and electronic resources; serve as a library liaison to one or more academic disciplines; and perform related duties.

Requirements: Master’s degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited college or university; at least two years of relevant work experience in serials or electronic resources in a library setting; and related skills & abilities.

Salary/Benefits: Annual salary is between $45,000 and $51,406 based on experience. Excellent benefits package. EOE-M/F/D/V.

Responsibilities: Day to day management and operation of the library including: Long range planning, including programming, services, grant applications and system management. System Administrator for the Union County Library System. Recruitment, leadership and development of staff of 18 system wide employees. Public relations and promotion for community events. Administrative oversight, advisor/leader for the Board of Trustees, and staff management. Fiscal management, fundraising and budgetary oversight.

Requirements: ALA Masters in Library Science. 7+ years of experience in public library administration. Experience in budgeting, accounting and personnel management. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with automated system management.

Let’s Talk About It: Love & Forgiveness

The ALA Public Programs Office, in collaboration with the Fetzer Institute’s Campaign for Love & Forgiveness, is now accepting applications for “Let’s Talk About It: Love & Forgiveness,” a theme-based reading and discussion program.

“Let’s Talk About It: Love and Forgiveness” will follow the well-established ALA reading and discussion series format “Let’s Talk About It,” using classic and contemporary literature to explore stimulating and relevant themes. Project themes and books were chosen by national project scholar Betty Sue Flowers, Ph.D., director of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum and former Kelleher professor of English at the University of Texas at Austin.

Following a competitive application process, 30 public libraries will be selected to receive:

  • A grant of $2,500, to be used to support program costs and scholar honoraria.
  • Program materials, which include introductory literature and essays on each of the themes, selections for additional reading and template promotional materials.
  • Training for the library project director at a national workshop, where they will hear from the project scholar, expert librarians and organizers and receive a program planning guide, materials and ideas.

Complete application information, including program guidelines and reading lists, can be found at www.ala.org. The deadline for applications is July 15, 2008.

Successful applicants will be notified of their status by the end of August.

Lehigh Valley Story Festival 2008

The Lehigh Valley Story Festival will be held March 28 – April 6, 2008 with guests Fran Yardley and Odds Bodkin.

This post and event date are for Mr. Bodkin’s workshop. Visit the Lehigh Valley Storytelling Guild site to view other events.

Teachers, librarians and storytellers are encouraged to attend Odds Bodkin’s workshop, The Door To Imagination: How To Awaken Your Inner Storyteller, on Friday April 4 from 9:00 to 4:00 PM. An hour and a half lunch break will be taken, however lunch will not be provided.

Act 48 credits (5) are available for this workshop. Northampton Community College is reporting these credits and the workshop should be on CPE Tracker.
