Carnegie-Whitney Award

The American Library Association Publishing Committee provides a grant of up to $5000 for the preparation of print or electronic reading lists, indexes, or other guides to library resources that promote reading or the use of library resources at any type of library.

Funded projects have ranged from popular, general-reader proposals such as “ReadMOre”, a reading list for Missouri’s state-wide reading program, to more specialized, scholarly proposals such as “Librarianship and Information Science in the Islamic World, 1966-1999:An Annotated Bibliography.”

Applications must be received by November 3, 2008. Recipients will be notified by the end of February 2009.

WNBA Eastman Publishing Grant

The Women’s National Book Association sponsors the WNBA Eastman Grant, which is available for librarians who are interested in learning about the relationship between the library and publishing professions.

The WNBA offers a grant of up to $750 for a librarian to take a course or participate in an institute devoted to aspects of publishing as a profession.

The grant honors Ann Heidbreder Eastman, who was an active and prominent member of both the WNBA and the American Library Association. The grant represents Ann’s commitment to education about publishing as well as her support for communication between librarians and publishers.

Librarians holding a master’s degree in library science or its equivalent and having at least two years of post-master’s work experience in a library may apply. The primary criterion will be the likelihood of career benefit to the person taking the course.

Fundraising Practices Seminar

If you are a nonprofit administrator or board member currently involved in fundraising or intending to implement some fundraising efforts, you need to attend this program. The technical aspects of fundraising activities and accounting for these activities are not something you want to overlook. Now that the IRS, the department of state and donors are in a heightened state of awareness about fundraising practices, attendance at this session will help you be prepared and prevent risk.

This seminar is presented by PANO and McKonly & Asbury. It is sponsored by The Hershey Company. The key areas of focus will be:

*Accounting for Fundraising: What is the right way to account for special events? When can we allocate costs jointly? When are government dollars considered program and when are they fundraising revenue? What is a fundraising expense?
*Monitoring anyone doing fundraising for your organization. This includes board members, staff, contract services and volunteers.
*Donor practices: How do you ensure donor privacy? What are appropriate donor policies?
*Bring samples of your fundraising solicitations and acknowledgements to critique your own materials.

Copyright in the Digital Age Workshop

The Berks County Library Association is sponsoring a one-day workshop: “Copyright in the Digital Age” with law librarian and professor Laura Gasaway. The event will be held at the Exeter Community Library on Friday, October 17, 2008.

This workshop is designed to provide librarians with an overview of the current status of the U.S. copyright law and its impact on library services.

Berks County is centrally located, approximately one hour, to an hour and one half away from Philadelphia, Harrisburg and Allentown. Public librarians can earn 6.5 continuing education credits for attending.

Public Relations Librarian: Peckville

Valley Community Library seeks a Public Relations/Adult Services Librarian. The successful applicant will develop programs and publicity to promote the library to the community; provide reference and reader’s advisory services to adults; participate in collection development; and provide training to staff and public in selected areas of adult services. Includes some supervision of staff. This is a full-time, entry level poistion with an excellent benefits package.

Requirements include a Master’s Degree in the field of Library Science from an ALA accredited Library Program or equivalent Pennsylvania state certification as a Professional Librarian, the ability to communicate clearly in verbal and written form, a working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, internet, online databases and print reference sources.

The Public Relations/Adult Services Librarian is responsible to the Library Director for the development of a Public Relations program, Reference and Reader’s Advisory service to patrons.

Gale Cengage Excellence Award

The Gale Cengage Learning Award for Excellence in Reference and Adult Library Services is given to a library or library system for developing an imaginative and unique resource to meet patrons’ reference needs. The resource can be a bibliography, a guide to the literature of a specific subject, a directory, a database or any other project that has helped the library meet adult or children’s reference needs. Tools, guides, or databases that have been developed for reader’s advisory or adult service questions and needs are also eligible for the award.

The award has been given annually since 1991 and is sponsored by Gale Cengage Learning, Famington Hills, Michigan and administered by RUSA. The award comes in the form of $3,000 and a citation.

Nominations are to be made in writing, stating in detail how the resource has contributed to meeting patron’s reference needs. A sample of the resource (or entry, pages’ printouts, etc.) must accompany the nomination. Additional information is available on the committee’s web site – >galegroupawardexcellence.cfm. The award has been given annually since 1991. All nominations should include the following:

*description of the resource
*description of the format, e.g., card file, database, etc.
*list of sources used to compile the resource
*target audience
*criteria used in selecting material for inclusion (If the resource is inclusive, state so clearly).
*breadth of coverage, i.e., time and subject
*explanation of what makes the resource imaginative or unique.

HACC Reference Librarian Position

HSLC/Access PA Annual Meeting

The HSLC/Access PA annual Meeting will be held on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at the Inn at Penn in Philadelphia. Last year’s speaker, Tom Asacker, was phenomenal, and this year’s speaker will provide a similar thought provoking and exciting experience.

The focus of the program part of the meeting will be on technology, with our speaker being David Pogue, New York Times personal technology columnist, Emmy-award winning CBS news correspondent, and CNBC contributor. Coordinator for Information Literacy and Reference Position

The Temple University Libraries have created a new position of Coordinator for Information Literacy and Reference, to coordinate their ongoing information literacy initiative and a broad array of reference services based in Paley Library, the flagship of Temple’s federated library system.

Under the direction of the Head of Reference and Instructional Services, the Coordinator will ensure alignment between instructional activities and desired learning outcomes of Libraries’ instruction and information literacy program; collaborate to create and implement assessment models and professional development opportunities to foster continuous improvement in teaching; coordinate scheduling of instructional and reference services; oversee virtual reference service, including staffing and monitoring trends and quality of service; and develop statistical and other reports on the activities of the department. The incumbent will provide scheduled hours of reference and classroom instruction, serve as liaison to an academic department, and participate in collection development and training of part-time staff and student workers, assist with the general management of projects, and serve as back-up to head of the department as needed. Participation in library-wide projects and engagement in professional activity is also expected.

Required education: ALA accredited MLS

Required skills and abilities:
*Demonstrated ability to provide reference and instructional services in an academic setting.
*Familiarity with information literacy programming in an academic setting.
*Strong analytical, organizational and customer service skills.
*Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
*Demonstrated ability to work both independently as well as part of a team.

Preferred:
*Demonstrated ability to develop and manage collections in multiple formats.
*Experience supervising support staff and student assistants.

Annual National Book Festival

The Capital Reading Council will celebrate the “Joy Of Reading” on the National Mall in Washinton D.C. on September 27, 2008 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The event is organized and sponsored by the Library of Congress and hosted by the First Lady Laura Bush. The festival is free and open to the public.

A bus will leave the Colonial Park Mall at 7:00 a.m. for Washington D.C. On the return trip, the bus will depart D.C. promptly at 7:10 p.m. The cost is $35 for members, $40 for non-members and $25 for children 12 and under.

Best Practices Awards

This is your chance to showcase your 2008 early learning programs. Share the programs and services offered to enhance early learning in your community. Share your best practices so that public libraries across the state can be recognized for innovative and successful programs in place for children, families and caregivers.

The application deadline of Friday, October 31, 2008 is earlier than in other years. This is so Best Practices in Early Learning booklets featuring the Best Practices Award winners can be distributed at the Pennsylvania Library Association Early Learning Forum and Best Practices Awards luncheon on April 1, 2009 at the Hilton Harrisburg.

Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from Florence and Wendell Minor, author and illustrator of, “If You Were a Penguin,” the book chosen for the state’s fourth One Book, Every Young Child program. All Best Practice winners will receive their awards from Wendell and Florence Minor and will become part of a Best Practices in Early Learning publication shared with elected officials and policy-makers.

Palinet 08 Conference

The Palinet 08 Conference features the latest open source solutions for libraries. “Wide Open: Your Library, Their Way” will discuss open source innovations, digitization technologies and modular solutions for today’s libraries. Held in conjunction with the PALCI Fall Member’s Meeting, those attending can take advantage of innovative programming including an exciting round robin session with fellow members who have already undertaken open source initiatives. There will also be sessions on collaborative digitization, new approaches to resource sharing, cataloging developments and digital collection implementation.

The keynote speaker is Roy Tennant, internationally recognized speaker and writer, well known throughout the library world for his expertise on the latest in technology for libraries.

Beyond Information to Transformation

On October 29, 2008, Joan Frye Williams will present Beyond Information to Transformation at the Green Tree Radisson from 9:00am to 12:30pm. The cost is $15.00 and there are 3.5 continuing education credits.

Joan is best known as an acute and sometimes irreverent observer to trends in what she calls “the cultural anthropology of libraries”. She is an internationally recognized library futurist and designer of innovative library services.

Health Literacy Workshop

What It Is, Why It Matters, How You Can Help is the focus of this health literacy workshop. Patients and their families need to be able to read and understand health information before they can act on it. This includes what health literacy is, why it matters and who it most affects.

Helen Osborne, M.Ed., OTR/L will present an overview about health literacy. She will highlight eight ways to improve communication. This includes practical strategies that health professionals of all disiplines can immediately incorporate into their practice. The objectives of the workshop are:

*Explain what health literacy is and its impact on treatment and care
*Describe 6 factors that affect health understanding
*Explore 8 ways to improve health communication
*Learn and practice strategies to write patient education materials
*Appreciate the necessity of reader feedback and ways to obtain it
*Appreciate the value of simple line drawings and metaphors
*Discuss way participants will use information presented

At the end of this workshop, participants should have the knowledge and skills to start making a health literacy difference. There are contact hours for continuing education. The date and time for this workshop is October 3, 2008 from 8:30am to 3:45pm. It will be held at:
