Esperanza College of Eastern University, a two year Christian college serving the Latino community of north Philadelphia, is seeking a Solo Librarian to run all areas (Circulation, Cataloging and Reference) of their 10,000 volume lubrary. System used: OPALS. This is an independent library, associated with, but not managed by, Eastern University’s library. Master’s degree in Library Science or related degree is required; also preferably bilingual (Spanish and English).

The librarian is responsible for the overall operation of the library, managing book acquisition, the book lending process, online resources, liaison with the Warner Library of Eastern University, inter-library loans and academic support to the faculty and dean, provides direct customer service to students, faculty, staff and visitors, oversees administration of the library cataloging system (OPALS) and reports to the Dean of Esperanza College. The library should function as an extension of the classroom and a resource for the entire college community.

Postion responsibilities include:

*Develop a mission statement for the library.
*Complete the sorting and cataloging of acquired books.
*Develop a 5-year library plan and time line.
*Assess the adequacy of the library book and journal collection, including e-books, and propose a multi-year book and journal acquisition plan, after consulting with the academic staff and faculty.
*Administer the library cataloging and information system (OPALS)
*Outreach to the faculty to provide assistance to students in support of their academic program, especially with regard to learning best research practices.
*Supervise student workers and any others working in the library, including administration of the circulation desk.
*Provide for a quiet environment in the library for study, research and reading.
*Establish and maintain an active ongoing working relationship with the Warner Library at Eastern University’s main campus in St. Davids.
*Maintain current knowledge and skills level in library science by participating in conferences and/or taking graduate courses in the field.
*Operational experience in library management, especially in planning and establishing new libraries.
*Familiarity with the educational needs and cultural dynamics of multicultural students, especially Latinos
*Computer literacy (Microsoft Office, Excel spreadsheets, word processing, Access, PowerPoint, Internet and email) is required.
*Must be willing to work at the Esperanza College campus at Nueva Esperanza in North Philadelphia

OverDrive Training

This training is a comprehensive overview of how to use the site and is intended for all public facing staff. Feel free to send 1-2 staff members from your location for the live web based training session called Digital Library 101. The online part of the session hosted by Overdrive is 1.5 hours. Carrie will discuss the service for about 30 minutes of information before the webinar and will be available for 30 minutes of practice and follow-up question work. The online session will be recorded so Carrie can use in additional trainings, such as staff meetings, retreats, and on request for groups as needed. The Office of Commonwealth Libraries purchased this web based application for public libraries across PA.
Learn a little about it in advance of the training and start to brainstorm how you might best find innovative ways to use it to attract new audiences and find efficient ways to serve current users. There’s much to consider when incorporating a new technology.
How can you best implement this one to make your programs more efficient and simultaneously more exciting?
How can you market your program to schools?
Should you begin summer program registration early so that students can sign up while they have access to their school’s technology?
How will you encourage users to log their reading online?

Once you get interested, sign up for the workshop. For those who can’t attend the workshop, or just want to learn independently, the complete user based manual for the 2008 version of the software is online too: Summer Reader Manual

Note for district interest: As district consultant, I plan to attend the training because the Office of Commonwealth Libraries has asked consultants to try to serve as another contact point for questions. The youth services manager at DCLS, Linda, will also be a great contact.

Kutztown Public Library is searching for a Director. Located in rural Berks County, Kutztown is within a 30 minute drive of the Lehigh Valley and Reading areas. The library seeks a Director with a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree, 12 credits of Library Science coursework and three years of library experience. Candidates with an MLS are encouraged to apply. The position is full time with a comprehensive benefits package provided by the Borough of Kutztown. The library is a family place library committed to supporting early literacy and young families. The library is currently renovating a previously unfinished space to be a children’s program area and community meeting space. The Dept. of Labor and Industry and the Office of Commonwealth Libraries invite you to attend a PA Workforce services webinar. The webinar will present an overview of workforce information that the public may access at PCs located within the State’s libraries. During the webinar staff from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry will review some of the online services and functionality available to public users through the internet. The Development Plan

The Big Read

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), announces the fifth deadline for The Big Read. The purpose of The Big Read is to revitalize the role of literature in American popular culture. Grants ranging from $5,000 – $20,000 are available to encourage local communities to inspire reading by developing and carrying out programming revolving around a single work of literature. Programming must be conducted between September 2009 and June 2010. This will be the only application deadline in 2009.

Big Read grants require the participation of a library as a lead applicant or a partner. Organizations selected to participate in The Big Read will receive:

*a grant
*financial support to attend a national orientation meeting
*educational and promotional materials for broad distribution
*an organizer’s guide for developing and managing Big Read activities
*guidance on working with local media
*inclusion of the organization and its activities on the Big Read Web site
*the prestige of participating in a highly visible national initiative

Connecting to Collections Bookshelf

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is offering a third and final round of competition to distribute 1,000 copies of the Connecting to Collections Bookshelf. The IMLS Bookshelf is a core set of texts that are essential for the care of collections. It is valued at approximately $800, focuses on collections typically found in art or history museums and in libraries’ special collections.

The IMLS is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s libraries and museums. The American Association for State and Local History(AASLH), the cooperating partner of the Connecting to Collections Bookshelf is a non-profit organization that preserves and interprets state and local history in order to make the past more meaningful to all Americans.

Libraries are urged to apply for Free IMLS Connecting to Collections Bookshelf. Recipients will also receive two guides: The Bookshelf User’s Guide and the Guide to Online Resources. Priority for the IMLS Bookshelf will be given to smaller institutions, but large museums and libraries with special collections are also eligible to apply. Dealing with Cuts?

It’s budget time of year for all of the district libraries. Most of you are busy drafting your outlook for 2009, working on plans for the use of state aid, and hoping you can continue to provide the growing quality level of service that patrons are accustomed to. Remember that the district is happy to review your draft budget if you’d like an outside pair of eyes to review your plans.

When making this year’s budget, in this tight economy, look at how you are forecasting your income and expenses.
How would you handle a 20% budget cut like Philadelphia may be facing now?
Where and when would citizens of your community feel the impact of lost dollars?
How evident would the cuts be to your public?
Is there anything you can do to demonstrate the value of your library and the return on dollars invested in order to protect current funding streams?
Are there efficiencies you can implement now to show that library dollars are the best investment?
