			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Library Technical Assistant program at Northampton Community College<br />
prepares you to enter the workforce as a paraprofessional capable of<br />
employment in a variety of libraries and information centers.</p>
<p>The program&#8217;s courses focus particularly on information resources,<br />
services for children and management of a small public library.<br />
Technical skills in such vital areas as acquisitions, electronic formats<br />
and cataloging of all types of materials are addressed.</p>
<p>Although courses can be taken on an as-needed basis to improve skills<br />
in specific areas, a specialized diploma is awarded upon completion of<br />
15 LTA credits.  Students in this program are required to perform online<br />
research, and visit libraries to investigate print resources and explore<br />
types of library services, in addition to reading assigned textbooks.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Harnessing Boomer Power will be held at WITF in Harrisburg on May 21st.  It is a panel discussion for agencies such as public libraries on how to recruit Baby Boomers to be volunteers in your libraries.  There is also another session following this one that evening called Boomers Night Out.  It will be an evening of suggestions and ideas for Boomers on where to take the next chapter of their lives.  It is appropriate for library staff and your patrons.</p>
<p>The first session for Harnessing Boomer Power is free.  The second session, Boomers Night Out has a $10.00 charge. </p>

<p>The Born to Read District Library Meeting led by Maureen Farley, Born to Read Coordinator for Dauphin County Library System, and Laurell Tarka, volunteer assistant, will give you new ideas and strategies for library programs and community partnerships focused on infants, very young children, and parents.    This is your opportunity to learn how to take another step in successfully promoting literacy for young children and increasing library attendance by families.   Public libraries have the resources needed to make the difference for very young children and this workshop will provide &#8220;tools&#8221; to help you.  </p>

<p>Tim Wherry, College Librarian at Penn State-Altoona, will address patents and trademarks in a digital age. Even for experienced librarians, the field of patents and patenting presents challenges. Information about patents is presented as well as the method for performing a patent search in order to assist library users in this complicated process. </p>

<p>Gloria Waldron Hukle, a native &#038; resident of New York State, is an 11th generation Waldron in the line of the New York Dutch Waldron family upon which the 17th century epic saga, MANHATTAN: SEEDS OF THE BIG APPLE (2006), is based. 2007 saw the publication of THE DIARY OF A NORTHERN MOON and the third book of the Wal-dron Series is scheduled for publication in 2009. </p>

Jacqueline&#8217;s presentations and programs continue to enthrall her audi-ences as she reveals the extraordinary quality of Beatrix Potter&#8217;s mind and her noble character. </p>

Dr. Chernow is a career encyclopedist, researcher and reference book editor. She is also coeditor of the Columbia Encyclopedia, fifth edition. She holds a PhD from Columbia University and is an adjunct assistant professor of publishing at New York University. <p>G. Countdown to Counting: Front End Analysis </p>
<p>What are the first steps in developing a plan to evaluate the value of a library? The Kirkpatrick Phillips model of building an evaluation plan for a library will be reviewed. As libraries transition to ever more electronic resources, remote users, and, often, decreased physical space, old measures of collections and clients-in-the-door may not provide adequate assessments of what the library pro-vides. Linda Matula Schwartz, Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network, will present the basic concepts of library metrics and detail the experience of participating in a front end analysis in a special library viewed as part of a larger Division of Education. </p>
<p>H. Grants: An Alternative Approach to Library Funding </p>
<p>Looking for other sources of funding during these tough economic times? Wondering how libraries and other organizations are able to secure funding through grants? Take this opportunity to hear from an experi-enced grant writer (Rachel Frick Cardelle, Northampton Community College) and a librarian (Raquel Braemer, Clymer Library) who have successfully navigated through the grant writing process. </p>

<p>Pat Lawton, Digital Projects Librarian from the Univer-sity of Notre Dame, will discuss cataloging in the digital age. Pat will draw on her research interests, which in-cludes digital libraries; utility and transformation of cata-loging tools in the digital world; digital-rights manage-ment; changes in information work processes; online pedagogy.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Registration is now open for the J-C Chapter Spring Program.  Attached is the information and registration brochure for our workshop titled <strong>Doing your best with less</strong>.  </p>
<p>The morning session will be Herb Landau discussing strategies from his book <strong>The Small Public Library Survival Guide: Thriving on Less</strong>.  </p>
<p>The afternoon session conducted by Lisa Collens will provide hands on experience in the computer lab learning about free applications that are available to make your job easier.</p>
<p>The workshop will be held on Thursday, May 21st at the Pattee/Paterno Library of Penn State at University Park.  This year the registration form will only be distributed electronically-<a href='http://capitalarealibrarydistrict.org/wp-content/springregistrationbrochure2009.pdf'>springregistrationbrochure2009</a>so please be sure to print out the form and mail it in to PaLA Headquarters before May 11th. <p>This is your opportunity to recognize your library supporters.  Nominations will be accepted for the following awards:</p>
<p>Citizen of the Year: a citizen who has contributed the most to the improvement of Pennsylvania libraries.</p>
<p>Corporate Citizen of the Year: a business or company that has been supportive of a local library as well as the entire Pennsylvania Library Community.</p>
<p>Friends Group of the Year: a Friends group that has provided the greatest assistance to its library. The Friends Group must be a member of PCBL.</p>
<p>Friends Newsletter of the Year: the best Friends group newsletter. The Friends Group must be a PCBL member.</p>
<p>Elected State Official of the Year: an official who has been a leader in promoting and supporting Pennsylvania’s libraries.</p>
<p>Library Public Relations Award: a library that has conducted an effective public relations campaign for a specific program or event that has resulted in significant community support.</p>
<p>Lifetime Achievement Award: a citizen or group who has shown exceptional meritorious service to libraries.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Grant Writing Workshop for the 2010 NETShare Grant Program</p>
<p>The Office of Commonwealth Libraries will sponsor a workshop to assist with the LSTA 2010 grant applications.  The grants will aid libraries in networking, resource sharing, services to special groups of people, digitization and specified grants for K-12 schools.  Guidelines to the applications will soon be available on the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s website. The applications themselves will soon become available on the PDE eGrant system.</p>
<p>Gain valuable information about:</p>
<p>            ♦The importance of collaboration between the librarians and other professionals when<br />
              planning a proposal.</p>
<p>            ♦Ways to strengthen portions of the applications.</p>
<p>            ♦Documents that need to be sent via USPS.</p>
<p>            ♦The eGrant system.</p>

<p>♦Academic librarians from accredited institutions</p>
