Lisa Scottoline Book Signing

Giant Food Stores will host a book signing by New York Times best-selling author and lifelong Pennsylvanian Lisa Scottoline. Ms. Scottoline’s newest novel, Look Again, was released on April 14 to enthusiastic acclaim.

Since her first novel was published in 1994, Ms. Scottoline has gone on to write 15 New York Times best-sellers, which have been published in 20 languages. A Philadelphia resident, she also writes a Philadelphia Inquirer weekly column titled “Chick Wit.”

Library Director – DuBois Public Library

The Board of Directors of the DuBois Public Library, DuBois, Pennsylvania is seeking a Library Director who is dynamic, eager to meet exciting new challenges, and has a vision for leading the DuBois Public Library into the 21st Century.

Serving over 19,000 area residents, the library has a budget of $280,000 and has a staff of 5 full time employees and 3 part time employees. Funding is provided by local municipalities. Additional support comes from the state as well as from grants, individual donations from patrons, memorial gifts and fund raising events.

Our ideal candidate will have an ALA accredited MLS, preferably with 3+ years public library experience with increasing management responsibilities. Other desired qualifications:

Proven supervisory skills
An awareness of the latest trends and innovations as they pertain to the library
Budget and financial experience
An ability to communicate effectively with the staff, the Board of Directors, and the community
Grant writing experience

Salary based on experience with a minimum of $35,000. The library contributes to benefits. Submit resume and a cover letter no later than June 1, 2009.

Training is FREE to professionals who work with children and is funded through the Department of Public Welfare. All Training and Resource Materials are Included. Course is approved for social work CEUs and Keystone Stars.

The workshop will review the elements of child abuse, including the legal definitions of a child,
perpetrator, and categories and indicators of abuse. The training will provide an overview of
mandated reporting obligations, including how to make a report, protections for those who
report, and the liability for failing to report. The workshop will also outline physical and
behavioral indicators of abuse, the proper procedures for reporting, guidelines to working
more effectively with local children and youth services agencies, and the key points of the
Child Protective Services Law, including the most recent changes.

Reference/Systems Librarian: Philadelphia

Holy Family University seeks a candidate with strong reference and computer skills to join our team in offering excellent library services to our students, faculty, and staff.

This full-time opening for a reference/system librarian is available at the university’s Northeast Philadelphia campus and reports to the Director for Library Services. The successful candidate will work Sundays through Thursdays (exact schedule negotiable). The candidate will give reference service and some library instruction, manage the library’s SirsiDynix integrated system, and serve as occasional backup at the Circulation Desk.

MS in Library Science or equivalent from an ALA-accredited program required. Extensive computer experience, knowledge of several modules of an automated library system, and experience in providing reference service preferred, as are academic library experience and some teaching or presentation experience. The successful candidate will need excellent communication skills, flexibility, and the ability to work independently in a team environment.

Public Meeting Notice Broadband in Pennsylvania

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is very pleased to announce a series of public meetings
across Pennsylvania to engage in public input, raise awareness, and collect comments concerning the Federal Broadband stimulus within the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The Act provides for grants and loans through two Federal agencies the Department of Commerce National Telecommunication and Information Administration, which provide grants through the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program and the Department of Agriculture Rural Utilities Service, which provides loans, loan guarantees, and grants.

These two programs will provide funds to assist in accelerating broadband access and deployment to unserved and underserved areas. Governor Rendell’s Office of Administration and the Department of Community and Economic Development are hosting outreach sessions to meet with local leaders, businesses, citizens and economic development organizations, informing them of the opportunities made available by the Federal Broadband stimulus. We are seeking your comments and suggestions as to the public needs and concerns, and the role of states in energizing the economy, and building an innovative environment through availability of broadband throughout the State.
