Library Benefit Luncheon: Harrisburg

This multimedia program will include live entertainment by the Jazz Connection and classical pianist Keiko Gulledge. Meet Karen Cullings, Community Relations Director of the Dauphin County Library System and listen to her discuss new developments at the Dauphin County Library System.

Library Director: Punxsutawney

The Punxsutawney Memorial Library invites applications for the position of Library Director. Our library is located in the rural community of Punxsutawney, PA. The Library serves the Punxsutawney Borough and the eleven surrounding municipalities with a combined population of 16,225 residents. The Library has an annual budget of $150,000.

The Punxsutawney Memorial Library is seeking an innovative individual interested in joining our team as library director. Working in conjunction with other library staff, the director should have a thorough knowledge of public library practices and procedures; an ability to communicate effectively with the staff, the Board of Directors, the community and pertinent organizations; the ability to handle the preparation of required reports on all levels dealing with the operation of the library; and an awareness of the latest trends and innovations as they pertain to the library.

We are looking for somebody who can motivate and direct our staff during our exciting new stage of growth. The director will research, develop and manage projects, implement new and innovative approaches to library services and service delivery methods, especially those that employ new technological tools. The director should be interested in providing programs to people of all ages with an emphasis on children and young adults.

·Qualifications: Master of Library Science from an ALA accredited program and an interest in current and upcoming technologies and computer skills are required. Library experience with supervisory experience desired. New graduates and current MLS/ALA students are encouraged to apply. Initiative and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities and flexibility are desired. A minor in business or relevant business experience is preferred. Applicant should be able to demonstrate knowledge of computer applications including QuickBooks, Microsoft Office (especially Word, Excel, Publisher, and Power Point), and Web 2.0 (wikis, blogs, etc.).

2009 AARP Award

The Innovative Services for an Aging Population: Office of Commonwealth Libraries Advisory Committee (ISAP) and AARP are interested in recognizing and promoting library service for older adults in Pennsylvania. They invite public libraries, regardless of size, to share their success in serving older adults through innovative and/or creative programming. This award, presented by AARP, will recognize a public library, small, medium, or large, in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania that conducts innovative and/or creative programming for older adults.

The following criteria will be considered in selecting the award-winning library:

¨Realistic program goals, plans for continuation of the program and how the older adult, age 50+, is being served by the library.

¨Community involvement in designing library services for older adults.

¨Coordination and collaboration with community organizations serving older adults.

¨Intergenerational aspect of the service.

The award will be presented at the Annual Conference of the Pennsylvania Library Association.

This is your chance to take the first workshop presented to us by the newly-hired John Houser, Technology Coordinator of HSLC.

Some outstanding librarians, doing phenomenal things with web 2.0 marketing, will also present. Librarian presenters include Sheila Redcay (York and Doylestown), Melinda Tanner, Kelly Rottmund and Kelley Beeson (Washington), Lisa Rives Collens (State College), and Leah Rudolph and Sandy Longo of the Abington Community Library, Mary Garm, and Elizabeth Davis (Scranton).

The University of Vermont Bailey/Howe Library seeks a creative, energetic, and user-oriented librarian to lead its Information and Instruction Services Department. Serving a student body of nearly 12,000 degree students, Bailey/Howe Library plays a vital role in the University’s commitment to liberal education, environment, health, and public service. In a time of changing expectations for information services and technology, the Director of Information and Instruction Services will lead a talented team of librarians by building teamwork, setting goals, and exploring innovative approaches to information and instruction services.

The Information and Instruction Services Department includes the Reference unit, the Government Documents and Maps unit, the library instruction program, and the library liaison program. Supervising 8 faculty librarians and 5 staff members, the Director reports to the Dean of Libraries and Learning Resources and participates in planning and policy-making for the Libraries as a member of the Dean’s Council. He or she will work collaboratively with the other units in the libraries: Resource Description & Analysis; Acquisitions, Preservation/End Processing, and Collection Development; Research Collectio ns; Technology and Access Services; and the Dana Medical Library.

Responsibilities include developing, articulating, and implementing vision and strategic goals for the Department; participating in library-wide strategic planning; facilitating participatory decision-making processes; initiating and overseeing innovative, user-centered programs and services in reference and information literacy to meet the information needs of the library’s users; mentoring faculty and staff; overseeing development and management of extensive reference, government documents, and maps collections; participating in providing reference service (including some evenings and weekends), library instruction, and other department services; and building effective partnerships and outreach with appropriate on- and off-campus units, programs, and faculty.

The Bailey/Howe Library is the main library at the University of Vermont (UVM), the largest institution of higher education in the state. Located in Burlington on scenic Lake Champlain, the University of Vermont was chartered in 1791 and is the fifth-oldest university in New England. UVM’s undergraduate, graduate, and medical students are enrolled in nine schools and colleges offering 97 bachelor’s, 53 master’s, and 22 doctoral programs.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: MLS degree from ALA-accredited program; minimum 7 years’ professional experience with progressive responsibilities; demonstrated leadership skills and management experience; excellent facilitation, interpersonal relations, and communication skills; demonstrated success in supervision, mentoring, and planning; reference and library instruction experience; broad knowledge of trends in reference and information services and issues in higher education; demonstrated knowledge of the range of technologies used to effectively deliver information resources and services; scholarly and creative accomplishments and service commitment commensurate with appointment to at least the level of Library Associate Professor; commitment to diversity and inclusion, to be demonstrated in writing in the cover letter. ALA Emerging Leaders Program

Application for PaLA’s Sponsorship
Class of 2010 ALA Emerging Leaders Program

The Pennsylvania Library Association (PaLA) is pleased to participate in ALA’s Emerging Leaders Program, which enables 120 new librarians to get on the fast track to leadership within ALA and the library field. This program consists of two workshop days with Maureen Sullivan and Connie Paul, participating in projects, networking with 119 of your peers, an inside look into ALA structure, and an opportunity to serve your profession. PaLA will select one member to represent Pennsylvania’s libraries.

ALA has set some eligibility requirements for this program. PaLA’s sponsored representative must meet the following criteria:

·ALA members
Young (under 35 years) or new librarians (of any age) with fewer than five years post-MLS experience; and
·Hold a recent MLS degree from an ALA- or NCATE-accredited program, or are currently in an MLS program; and
·Able to attend both ALA conferences and collaborate virtually between meetings; and
·Ready to commit to serve on an ALA Division, Chapter, or Round Table committee, taskforce or workgroup upon completion of program.

In addition, for its support of the candidate, PaLA will ask the selected candidate to serve the Association at the state or local level. Applicants must be members of PaLA to qualify.

The Board of Directors of the Hoyt Library is seeking a dynamic Library Director who will build on the Library’s past successes while meeting the exciting challenge of opening a beautiful new wing.

The Hoyt Library is located in Kingston, and serves seven communities in Northeastern Pennsylvania, having a combined population of over 33,000. The Hoyt is a member of the Luzerne County Library System. The library has an annual budget of approximately $600,000 and has a staff of 4 full-time employees and 10 part-time employees.

The candidate should have a Master of Library Science degree, preferably from an ALA accredited school. Ideally, the candidate should have five years of library experience with at least two years as a supervisor. Other qualifications include:

· Experience with budgets and financial matters
· Established supervisory skills
· Experience with collection development and programming
· Thorough knowledge of current trends in library/library science
· Thorough knowledge of library reference sources (print and digital)
· Thorough knowledge of children’s, young adult, and adult literature.
· Experience in public relations.

· Experience with management of technology programs within a library context.

The salary is in the $35,000 – $40,000 range commensurate with experience and qualifications. Health insurance (including dental and vision) is included. The job provides a generous benefits package.

Lancaster PANO Town Hall Meeting

Special Event Date: July 16, 2009

Joe Geiger, CEO of PANO and Monica Gould, President, Strategic Consulting Partners are hosting regional town hall and networking sessions across the state. These valuable forums will not only be educational but will also provide you with a forum to discuss your challenges as a sector. Nonprofit staff, volunteers, board members, and donors alike will benefit from the presentations, which will center around: how to partner with elected officials for economic stimulus, how to shore up relationships with your funding streams, how to address strategies of efficiency and pro-activeness, advocacy, capacity-building, telling your story and leadership.

These informative and interactive sessions will equip you to explain to your boards, your members/constituents and funders the challenges you are facing in the current marketplace. You will walk away with a menu of strategies on how to address these challenges and you will be able to take these strategies back to your workplace and start implementing ideas on the same day.

The presentations will be followed by a facilitated discussion on our sector’s challenges and future initiatives that PANO can undertake to help us stay competitive and move us forward.

This Town Hall Meeting will be on July 16, 2009 from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm at:
