Library Director: Allegheny County

The Oakmont Carnegie Library is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Library Director. We are looking for a director who is friendly, energetic, and who possesses excellent interpersonal and communication skills to carry the library towards its vision, working with the board, staff, library and community organizations to make the library a center of lifelong learning.

The Library Director is responsible for carrying out the policies and procedures of the Library Board as they affect both library customers and employees. Administrative responsibilities include collection development, personnel management, maintenance of building and equipment, and budget preparation and management. The Library Director also represents the Library at local, county, district and state meetings.

The library, a department of the Borough of Oakmont and a member of the Allegheny County Library Association, has a budget of approximately $375,000 annually, 1 full-time, 8 part-time staff and 4 pages, and currently serves a local population of 6,911 that is expected to expand over the next few years.

Qualified candidates will possess an MLS or MLIS degree from an accredited school, have at least five years of experience working in the library field, including at least one year serving in a supervisory capacity. The borough offers a competitive benefits package. Salary is dependent upon qualifications.

Reading Lists Grant

The American Library Association Publishing Committee Carnegie-Whitney Awards provide a grant of up to $5,000 for the preparation of print or electronic reading lists, indexes or other guides to library resources that promote reading or the use of library resources at any type of library.

Funded projects have ranged from popular, general-reader proposals such as “ReadMOre,” a reading list for Missouri’s state-wide reading program, to more specialized, scholarly proposals such as “Librarianship and Information Science in the Islamic World, 1966-1999: An Annotated Bibliography.”

Applications must be received by Nov. 6, 2009. Recipients will be notified by the end of February 2010.
