If you are a talented strategic thinker, library systems innovator and collaborative leader with public library management/administration experience, this may be the position for you!

The mission of the Schlow Centre Region Library is to open doors for members of our diverse community to gather, share, and discover a wealth of ideas, the joy of reading, and the power of information by providing services and resources in a welcoming, convenient and responsive manner. The community’s new state-of-the-art library building was finished in 2005. Over 300,000 people visited the library in 2008, checking out over 706,000 items. The library provides 37 public computer stations and a collection of over 133,000 books and other library materials. In fiscal year 2009, the library budget is approximately $2 million with a staff of 27 full-time equivalents. The Schlow Library staff is committed to sharing their expertise with library staff throughout Centre County and the Central Pennsylvania Library District.

Schlow Centre Region Library is located in beautiful State College, Pennsylvania, also known as Happy Valley and home to The Pennsylvania State University. In 2008, State College was ranked as the second safest metropolitan area in the United States by the CQ Press. Centre Region residents enthusiastically support library programs and services with over 27,000 people attending library programs in 2008.

The next library director will have the capability to guide the Library toward a future where resources are maximized, technology is leveraged and services are tailored to the rapidly evolving needs of patrons. The director will ensure that the Library continues its vision of being the “community’s best and most sought after gathering place where all are welcome to pursue their interests, learn new skills, express their creativity, interact with other members of the community, and enhance their quality of life”.

If you feel you have the experience, qualifications and motivation to fulfill this challenging role, you are invited to apply for this opportunity. Applications are due December 17, 2009. Pennsylvania Humanities Council (PHC) is currently accepting applications from non-profit organizations, ranging from libraries to historical societies to museums, interested in hosting a Humanities on the Road television taping at their site. Twelve sites will be selected for 2010 and another 12 for 2011. The application postmark deadline is Monday, November 23, 2009.

Non-profit organizations that have long been preserving and promoting Pennyslvania’s rich cultural heritage can look forward to an exciting new opportunity to showcase their organization to millions of television viewers. Beginning in 2010, PHC will join forces with the Pennsylvania Cable Network to produce Humanities on the Road, a new television series that will bring public humanities presentations to cultural sites throughout the state.

The project, hosted by award-winning journalist Tracey Matisak, will feature talent from PHC’s Commonwealth Speakers’ bureau. The show will also shine a spotlight on the participating cultural site, as it engages the audience in a discussion of arts, history, literature and the important ideas that shape our world. The humanities presentations—and the hosting non-profits—will be broadcast to more than 3.3 million households across Pennsylvania.

This training by Susan Pannebaker and Anne Kruger will provide a full training session on incorporating math and science into your library programming.

• Increase the number of children attending your programs
• Get children excited about math and science
• Use hands-on activities to make books come alive
