Critical brain development occurs for every young child between the ages of 0 – 48 months for (1) trust, (2) impulse control, (3) cooperation, (4) independence, (5)thinking skills and (6) motor development. Families with young children need to experience the fabulous programs and the access to resources their public library provides!

The Born to Read District Library Meeting led by Maureen Farley, Born to Read Coordinator for Dauphin County Library System, and Laurell Tarka, volunteer assistant, will give you new ideas and strategies for library programs and community partnerships focused on infants, very young children, and parents. This is your opportunity to learn how to take another step in successfully promoting literacy for young children and increasing library attendance by families. Public libraries have the resources needed to make the difference for very young children and this workshop will provide “tools” to help you.

B. MANHATTAN: Seeds of the Big Apple

Gloria Waldron Hukle, a native & resident of New York State, is an 11th generation Waldron in the line of the New York Dutch Waldron family upon which the 17th century epic saga, MANHATTAN: SEEDS OF THE BIG APPLE (2006), is based. 2007 saw the publication of THE DIARY OF A NORTHERN MOON and the third book of the Wal-dron Series is scheduled for publication in 2009.

10:30 – 11:30 CONCURRENT SESSIONS

D. Challenges and Opportunities for Per-sonal Service in an Impersonal World

Coping with tight budgets, high client expectations, constant change, technology, and multiple time constraints threaten our professional equilibrium. Despite these realities, this program challenges you to consider the possibility of outstanding and personalized service to every library user. Dr. Marie Radford, author and professor, presents this engaging and provocative presentation to inspire

and to reaffirm excellent service as a core library value. Dr. Radford is the author of ACADEMIC LIBRARY RE-SEARCH and VIRTUAL REFERENCE SERVICE (available through the ALA bookstore online).

2:45 – 3:45 CONCURRENT SESSIONS

G. Countdown to Counting: Front End Analysis

What are the first steps in developing a plan to evaluate the value of a library? The Kirkpatrick Phillips model of building an evaluation plan for a library will be reviewed. As libraries transition to ever more electronic resources, remote users, and, often, decreased physical space, old measures of collections and clients-in-the-door may not provide adequate assessments of what the library pro-vides. Linda Matula Schwartz, Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network, will present the basic concepts of library metrics and detail the experience of participating in a front end analysis in a special library viewed as part of a larger Division of Education.

H. Grants: An Alternative Approach to Library Funding

Looking for other sources of funding during these tough economic times? Wondering how libraries and other organizations are able to secure funding through grants? Take this opportunity to hear from an experi-enced grant writer (Rachel Frick Cardelle, Northampton Community College) and a librarian (Raquel Braemer, Clymer Library) who have successfully navigated through the grant writing process.

I. Cataloging in the Digital Age

Pat Lawton, Digital Projects Librarian from the Univer-sity of Notre Dame, will discuss cataloging in the digital age. Pat will draw on her research interests, which in-cludes digital libraries; utility and transformation of cata-loging tools in the digital world; digital-rights manage-ment; changes in information work processes; online pedagogy.

Conference Date: November 07, 2007

More events

This year the 18th Annual CODI Conference will be held at the lovely Westin Convention Center in Pittsburgh, PA from November 7-9, 2007. The Westin Convention Center is located in the heart of the business and art center of Pittsburgh and is attached, via a skyway, to the nation’s first 100% environmentally green convention center, the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.

Eat, Think and Share! is the theme of the conference this year and is a reflection of what the CODI Conference does so well. It is the best opportunity to learn (and think about) the ever changing face of technology, to hear our colleagues’ unique solutions to common problems, and review new products or new features from SirsiDynix and the vendors who attend this annual conference. It is a time to share our thoughts and discoveries with our contemporaries. And, of course, it is a great time to sit down and break bread with both our old friends and new acquaintances.

The Keynote speaker this year will be Roy Tennant, author of a number of books including Managing the Digital Library (2004). Roy is also the author of the monthly column “Digital Libraries” for the Library Journal, and a recognized pioneer in digital library development and internet training.
