Check out the executive summary for the U.S. IMPACT Studies from the University of Washington.
Great facts from this report could be useful in presentations to your community about the value of library technology resources. Below are just a few samples to get you to read more yourself:
-44 percent of people in households living below the federal poverty line ($22,000 a year for a family of four) used public library computers and Internet access.
-The study explored eight areas where people reported using library computers in the past 12 months: education, employment, health and wellness, accessing government and legal services and information, participating in community life, managing household finances, entrepreneurship, and building and maintaining social connections.
-In the study, 40 percent of the respondents (30 million people) used
library computers and internet access for employment or career
purposes.

Public Libraries in PA Work on a Statewide ILS

Posted in General, ILS, PA Projects, Technology on March 22, 2010 by Carrie

At the March District Library Center meeting, the work of library leaders on the statewide ILS was revealed. Meeting attendees enjoyed a preview of the system.

The basics:
-The staff end of the system is based on Georgia’s PINES.
-It currently does not have an acquisitions module, but one is being developed.
-The end user/catalog part of the product is browser based, with ease of use features for customers and staff. It is created in Vufind.
-Current Millenium Libraries will be offered to transition to the new system in fall 2010. Other libraries will be invited to join after that.
-Interlibrary Loan features are built in, but a delivery system must be fully developed in order to establish the ability for users to request items directly for delivery to their home library.
-There is no cost model at this time. However, the more libraries that participate, the lower the costs will be for everyone.
-It supports SIP 2 for authentication to outside resources like OverDrive.

Libraries handle weather closings with ease

Posted in General on December 23, 2009 by Carrie

What does your library do when you have to make a decision to close early, open late, or suspend business operations for a day due to weather or other emergency?

Some things to consider:
1. Who is involved in making the decision to Close?
2. What factors do you base the decision on?
3. How do you notify staff (and library delivery) of the decision?
4. How do you notify the public when you have made a decision?
Here’s a great sample of how Hershey Public Library tells the public: Weather info
It’s a good idea to make sure your organization is registered to take advantage of easy posting. I love the online alerts that WITF’s service provides.

When Capital Area Library District Delivery must be cancelled, delayed more than 3 hours, or suspended, an email will be sent to the capitalarealibraries mailing list.
If your library closes on a day you expect delivery, make sure that the drivers know not to stop. Notification to your district consultant via email or phone is best, but if it’s very last minute or an emergency and you can’t reach me, call the library immediately before you on the route and leave a message.

Millennials in Library Teleconference

Posted in Events - Training, General on September 18, 2009 by Nancy

Event Date: November 13, 2009

More events

The Millennial Generation, Generation Y, Echo Boomers, Digital Natives, and the Trophy Generation are all terms used to describe people born in the United States between the early 1980s and the early 1990s. They have been shaped by a heady mix of culture, politics, and technology. Millennials have had an unprecedented exposure to mass media, pop culture, instant communication, and cultural freedom woven together by a complex technological net. It is daunting to try to classify a group of over 70 million people easily. Our teleconference will seek to add nuance to these classifications to help us understand them more fully and answer the questions: Who are Millennials? How can our libraries better serve them as patrons, students, and staff?

November 13, 2009

Presenter: Jennifer Kushell
