Here’s a clip of some text from the page:
“Nominate your librarian for the third year of the Carnegie Corporation of New York/New York Times I Love My Librarian Award!
Nominations for 2010 stay open through September 20.
Nominate a librarian in a:
School Library
Public Library
College, Community College, University Library

There are nearly 123,000 libraries nationwide, and librarians touch the lives of the people they serve every day. The award encourages library users like you to recognize the accomplishments of exceptional public, school, college, community college, or university librarians. We want to hear how you think your librarian is improving the lives of the people in your school, campus or community.
Up to ten winners will be selected this year and receive a $5,000 cash award, a plaque and $500 travel stipend to attend an awards reception in New York hosted by The New York Times. In addition, a plaque will be given to each award winner’s library.
The award is administered by the American Library Association with support from Carnegie Corporation of New York and The New York Times.”

Share the word with the public and other library staff!
Let’s recognize all the great library impact work happening in our district!

Check out the Foundation Center resources housed at the Dauphin County Library System’s largest library
ESA
.

Online, you can search a database for examples of possible areas of collaboration. Consider how streamlining the work your organization does by combining forces with other libraries and non-profits could help to expand the impact and make the outcomes of your work more visible in the community. Collaboration Ideas.

Use the search to find examples of other non-profits who have joined together in a collaboration to:
-Purchase goods and /or services together
-Share (co-locate) or better utilize space
-Combine marketing efforts
-Share development (fundraising) activities
-Share advocacy efforts
-Form a confederation
-Merge
-Share staffing
-Share staff training

How could your library apply to win the next Collaboration Prize?

Pennsylvania’s public libraries serve as information hubs in the community, providing free and equal access to all their services, including the computer centers. Residents as well as non-residents are free to use the internet without charge and the libraries and services are accessible to those with disabilities. Public libraries also make their facilities open to other non-profits and government agencies. Often a community’s only welcoming public space open in the evenings and weekends, libraries’ only restrictions on use would be due to space needs or the limited number of computers available. Many libraries have no more room for immobile workstations. Providing wireless and laptops would allow libraries to offer more computer time/access and meet demand. Patrons could access Internet resources anywhere in the library.

You are urged to consider applying to install or expand Wi-Fi in your library through the special stimulus initiative that is in effect for libraries. (An application may be made for computers, equipment, shelving, furniture, even bookmobiles and renovations and construction). Wi-Fi is suggested as it offers an opportunity to expand access. With the Wi-Fi application, you may want to consider laptops, a charging cart, a separate server perhaps, installation costs and other equipment that would complement Wi-Fi. If you already have Wi-Fi, consider expanding or updating your laptops etc.

For this program:
•	Your library must be in a location with a population of 20,000 or less. (This is NOT like CDBG where service population is considered; only your facility’s location is considered for the population).
•	You do not need to have a building project.
•	Grants are possible based on the median household income; loans are available for those above the limit.
•	Please Read the attached Library flyer Fact Sheet-Library flyer

This special initiative is on top of a current program* being run by the US Department of Agriculture. The program aims to provide educational opportunities and improve public services in rural communities.

Your first step would be to contact the USDA regional office in your location- Contact_Us.htm.
It is to your benefit to do this as quickly as possible. Do not delay. Your application should be in no later than April.

Do Not Hesitate to Apply—especially if you are in an area with a low median household income and could receive a grant!

Pennsylvania Humanities Council (PHC) is currently accepting applications from non-profit organizations, ranging from libraries to historical societies to museums, interested in hosting a Humanities on the Road television taping at their site. Twelve sites will be selected for 2010 and another 12 for 2011. The application postmark deadline is Monday, November 23, 2009.

Non-profit organizations that have long been preserving and promoting Pennyslvania’s rich cultural heritage can look forward to an exciting new opportunity to showcase their organization to millions of television viewers. Beginning in 2010, PHC will join forces with the Pennsylvania Cable Network to produce Humanities on the Road, a new television series that will bring public humanities presentations to cultural sites throughout the state.

The project, hosted by award-winning journalist Tracey Matisak, will feature talent from PHC’s Commonwealth Speakers’ bureau. The show will also shine a spotlight on the participating cultural site, as it engages the audience in a discussion of arts, history, literature and the important ideas that shape our world. The humanities presentations—and the hosting non-profits—will be broadcast to more than 3.3 million households across Pennsylvania.

For more information on the project or to download a copy of the application, visit hotr-guide.pdf
