Health Programs and Funding Available

Kathel Dunn, Associate Director of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, wants you to know that they offer free classes and grants for health related projects.

The grant information can be found at nnlm.gov.  Currently the MicroAwards and Exhibit Awards are open and available. The deadline is April 30, 2008.

Applicants must be members of the network but membership is free and signing up is simple and straightforward.

ALSC/BWI Reading Program Grant: Dec. 3 Deadline

The ALSC/BWI Reading Program Grant is designed to encourage reading programs for children in a public library by providing financial assistance of $3,000, while recognizing ALSC members for outstanding program development.

The applicant must plan and present an outline for a theme-based summer reading program in a public library. The Committee encourages proposals with innovative ways to encourage involvement of children with physical or mental disabilities.

Public Humanities Scholars

Pennsylvania Humanities Council & Pennsylvania State University Partnership Connects Scholars and Community Groups in Central PA

The Pennsylvania Humanities Council (PHC) invites nonprofit organizations in mid-central Pennsylvania to apply for Public Humanities Scholars. Public Humanities Scholars matches nonprofits with Penn State scholars so that they can plan and present quality humanities programs in their communities. This initiative is offered in partnership with the Pennsylvania State University’s Institute for Arts and Humanities (IAH).

The application deadline for 2008 projects is November 1, 2007.

PaLA Conference Scholarships

The deadline for all PaLA Conference Scholarships have been extended to August 31, 2007.

PaLA offers first time conference attendees, who are involved in Youth Services, the opportunity to apply for the Boyds Mills Conference Scholarship. Please visit the following link to view this form: Boyds Mill

Grant from National Libraries of Medicine

The National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) Middle Atlantic Region (MAR), is accepting applications for MedlinePlus Go Local awards.

The purpose of the MedlinePlus Go Local project is to link MedlinePlus users to information about health services in local communities, including hospitals, physicians, nursing homes, support groups, health screening providers, and others. You can link directly from each MedlinePlus health topic to services related to that particular topic. For example, if you choose Go Local from the MedlinePlus Chronic Fatigue Syndrome page, you will find links to local services such as Acupuncturists, Internists, Osteopaths, Hospitals and so on in the area you select.

The number of awards made is dependent on funding availability.  Maximum award is $25,000.

2007 Marietta Y. King and Alberta Walden Still Award and the AARP Award

This is a reminder that the invitation to apply for the 2007 Marietta Y. King and Alberta Walden Still Diversity Award for public service to older adults in a diverse community and the invitation to apply for the AARP Award to recognize and promote library service for older adults in Pennsylvania are due by August 10th.   **Update:   The Older Adults Task Force is extending the deadline to apply the 2007 Marietta Y. King and Alberta Walden Still Diversity Award for public service to older adults in a diverse community and the AARP Award to recognize and promote library service for older adults in Pennsylvania.  The deadline will be extended until August 21st.

What special programs has your library presented in the past year for the older adults in your area? What programs have you presented to a diverse community of older adults?

Print out a copy, fill in the information about your special program and send it in. We look forward to hearing from you.
